Congratulations again to the YF staff for a successful "YF Olympics 2011".

23 YF members and friends participated. The day was filled with sack races, badminton, volley ball, horse shoes and hop scotch. It was the first time some of the girls experienced these activities. There were adults available to show them how things were supposed to be done.

The day produced a couple of bumps and tumbles. We thank our Health Department for covering the event from the beginning to the end. The adults including several officers displayed almost forgotten jump rope skills. One DDGM in particular beat all of us in a foot race thanks to her new knee and the GC requests adult sized hula hoops next year so she can show us how it's done.

After lunch awards were given. Bronze, silver and gold medals were awarded to winners in each category. Ribbons were given for special recognition. Everyone including adults walked away with a medal for participating. It was a great day of fun, fresh air and exercise. I look forward to next year;

The basic responsibility of the "East" can be found in the Ritual and Grand Chapter Constitution and By-Laws. However, the true measure of an administration is its response ability. The ability to respond not only in "presiding over the deliberations of the Chapter" and "doing the work in the spirit of faith and prayer." But, also by being mindful of the individuals around you.

A Chapter is not just run by the "Book." It's run with hearts, minds and imagination. Assuring the members that you ask only for their best efforts and intentions. Heart in hopefully calming a nervous Conductress and reminding her that the initiation is not just repeating the words and walking in the right direction. It's pointing out that her years in the Chapter were not just spent watching, but also learning and assuring her that she really does know more than she thinks she does.

Use your mind and imagination in designing and implementing a program that not only satisfies the minimum requirements of activities, but sparks the interest of all members. Talk to them too and get their opinions. Use the talent around you that may be lying dormant. Then watch the ability of your Chapter to respond to you and your efforts.

Congratulations to the YF staff and everyone else that assisted in the trip to Washington, D.C. yesterday. I had a wonderful time, as did everyone else.

The “White House Visitor Center” was the perfect place to learn about the White House itself along with the family life of past occupants and the current residents. “The Old Post Office” was a magnificent structure. The massive food court and the variety of cuisines available provided plenty of choices. Maybe we can take a clock tower tour next time. “Madam Tussauds Washington, DC” brought everyone to life. The wax figures “made ja’ look!” It was historic and contemporary rolled into one. The relaxing bus ride home was the perfect way to end a fast-paced day of activities.

Oziel Grand Chapter, thank you for supporting our programs, projects and initiatives; most recently your support of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Scholarship Luncheon. For those of you who were not there, you missed a dynamic speaker, Mr. Jerome Harris, Chairperson of the NJ Black Issues Convention. NJ BIC is a consortium of organizations committed to unity, survival and progress. He stated they needed us for our long history of commitment and the structure our organization will bring to the table. We are in the process of completing our application to NJ BIC. I am grateful to the entire MLK Luncheon Committee.
